Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) testing is a method used to assess the resistance of aggregates to sudden impacts or shocks. In this test, a sample of the aggregate is subjected to a specified impact force by a standard weight dropped from a specified height. The percentage of fines produced from the sample after impact is then calculated. The AIV is determined by dividing the weight of the fines by the total weight of the sample and multiplying by 100. This value indicates the toughness of the aggregate and its ability to withstand impact loads, making it useful in evaluating the suitability of aggregates for road construction and other applications where resistance to impact is critical.
