A sand replacement test apparatus is a device used to determine the in-place density of soils. It is commonly used in construction and civil engineering projects to assess the compaction of soil layers. The apparatus consists of a metal calibrating container, a cylindrical jar, a detachable metal pouring cone, and a shutter release mechanism. 
During the test, the calibrating container is filled with a known volume of dry sand. The soil to be tested is excavated, and a hole is created in the ground. The cylindrical jar is placed in the hole, and the soil is carefully excavated from around the jar without disturbing its position. 
The jar is then filled with the sand from the calibrating container, and the volume of sand used is recorded. This volume is used to calculate the in-place density of the soil. The sand replacement test is a simple and effective method for determining the compaction of soils in the field.
